Chesterfield is my home, and like any great town, it deserves a great coffee scene. I believe you can tell a lot about a café by its espresso — no milk to hide behind, no fancy syrups to mask the bean. Just pure, honest coffee.
This trail is my personal notebook made public — a guide to the spots worth visiting, the ones to skip, and the hidden gems that might just make your morning.
Each stop rated purely on the quality of their espresso, atmosphere, and that all-important dedication to the craft of great coffee. Three new stops added — including the brand-new Host on Chatsworth Road!
A Chesterfield institution. Despite the "tea" in the name, their espresso offering is seriously impressive — sourcing quality beans and pulling shots with real care. The warm, eclectic interior makes it a joy to linger.
Tucked away in Theatre Yard off Low Pavement, Woodheads is a hidden treasure. A proper independent with character — the espresso is taken seriously here. A favourite stop for Chesterfield's creative crowd.
Light, airy and beautifully renovated, Chesterfield Coffee Co. has become a firm favourite. Bar-style seating overlooking the bowling green adds a unique touch. Solid espresso and a relaxed, welcoming feel.
A smart Italian-inspired café right on Packers Row in the heart of Chesterfield town centre. Coffee Azzurro brings a continental espresso culture to the high street — short, punchy shots and a buzzy atmosphere.
Right on Irongate near the crooked spire, The Town House Cafe occupies a charming spot with great footfall. A solid espresso offering in a traditional setting — worth a stop when you're exploring the town centre.
A perfect five-star rating says it all. Host Coffee in Clay Cross is a short drive south of Chesterfield but absolutely worth it. Exceptional espresso, outstanding hospitality — this is what a modern indie café should look like.
A friendly neighbourhood café near Stephenson Place. Reliable espresso and a great spot to catch up with the local tech community over a decent short black. Unpretentious and consistent.
Figaro earns its near-perfect score. A slightly out-of-town gem that rewards the short journey — the espresso here is carefully sourced and expertly pulled. An intimate space with a genuine passion for coffee craft.
The Clay Cross Host Coffee was already on the trail — now they've brought the magic to Chatsworth Road. Opened in Spring 2025 by founders Michael Walker and Christian O'Connell, this second branch is already buzzing. Specialty coffee, welcoming staff, and a slick modern interior. The espresso? Predictably excellent.
A welcome addition to the Low Pavement scene, Preggo brings a relaxed, continental feel to one of Chesterfield's most characterful streets. Right in the heart of the town's independent quarter — a natural stop on any coffee trail worth its beans.
The library's refreshed café is a new addition to the trail. Conveniently located inside Chesterfield Library, it's a handy pitstop when you're in the town centre. The espresso is still finding its feet — but it's on the list, and Alan will be returning to deliver a proper verdict.
